Jazz guitarist Julian Lage performs with his quartet, featuring John Medeski, Jorge Roeder and Kenny Wollesen, in a live extension of his album 'Scenes from Above'.
Julian Lage and his quartet play the Musical Instrument Museum on Tuesday, October 27, with two showtimes: 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM. The set is the live extension of his latest album, Scenes from Above (Blue Note Records, 2026), which is the first recording he's made with this particular lineup.
Lage is a guitarist who's spent nearly two decades working through the different strains of American musical history, and he's picked up seven Grammy nominations along the way. He's known as a strong improviser, and his playing pulls from the blues and early rock as much as from his jazz idols. The New York Times called him "one of jazz's breezier virtuosos," and Guitar World described his sound as "electric volatility."
This quartet is his newest one, and the lineup for the night is Lage on guitar, John Medeski on keyboards, Jorge Roeder on bass, and Kenny Wollesen on drums. Since Scenes from Above is their first record together, the show is the first time you'll hear this group working through that material live.
