Chamber music for strings and clarinet performed alongside the Chaos Theory art exhibition at Legend City Studios.
The Downtown Chamber Series returns to Legend City Studios this weekend with two performances: Saturday, Oct 17, at 2 PM and Sunday, Oct 18, at 7:30 PM. The program pairs Mozart's Clarinet Quintet with Marc Mellits' Titan, written for bass clarinet and string quartet.
On the strings are Tessa Gotman Bock and Aaron Requiro on violin, Isabel Tannenbaum on viola, and Bridget Pasker on cello. Jeff Anderle handles the clarinet and bass clarinet, switching between the two for the different pieces. The Mozart is a standard of the repertoire, and Titan is a contemporary work for the same instrumentation, so you get two distinct takes on the clarinet-and-strings format in one sitting.
Both concerts run alongside the Chaos Theory art show, which has been hosted every October for 26 years by studio owners Randy Slack, Jason Grubb, Jon Balinkie, and Brandon Sullivan. It brings together more than 70 local artists, each presenting one newly created work, so the art changes every year just as the music does.

That's the whole point of the series. It was started in 2000 by musicians and artists who wanted a different way to do chamber music in Phoenix, and it's grown into a 501(c)(3) non-profit that puts on six programs a year. The signature is the setting: concerts are always held alongside visual art, and the venue, the musicians, and the exhibition change every time, so no two programs are the same. The repertoire ranges across strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion.
Tickets are $25, and full-time students get in free. You can catch the music and the show at Legend City Studios, 521 W Van Buren St, Phoenix, AZ 85003, on Saturday at 2 PM or Sunday at 7:30 PM.
