Concert by the American folk musician and multi-instrumentalist Dom Flemons, known as The American Songster, at the Musical Instrument Museum.
Dom Flemons plays the Musical Instrument Museum on Wednesday, December 23, at 7 PM. He's a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who performs under the name The American Songster, and this is a solo show, so it's just him on stage.
If you're not familiar with the name, the title tells you a good bit about what he does. He works with early American music—the kind of songs that come out of the folk and roots traditions—and he plays a variety of instruments to bring them to life. He's as much a collector and a historian as he is a performer, and he's spent years digging into the old songs that shaped American music. When he's on stage, he's usually switching between different instruments throughout the set, so you'll hear him move from one to another as the songs change.
The venue is the MIM Music Theater, right inside the museum. It's a good fit for a show like this, since the museum itself is built around the history of instruments from all over the world. You can spend some time with the exhibits before the music starts, and then head into the theater for the concert.
