A lecture by Heard Museum Curator Olivia Barney (Diné) exploring Indigenous foodways, stories, and traditions as part of the Artful Mornings series.
Heard Museum curator Olivia Barney (Diné) leads a session on Indigenous foodways this Saturday, October 17, as part of the museum's Artful Mornings series. It's a morning for members, and the talk runs from 11 AM to noon, with doors opening at 10:45 AM.
Barney's talk focuses on Indigenous foodwaysâthe stories, traditions, and connections that surround the food and eating practices of Indigenous peoples. It's not just about recipes; it's about the cultural history and the relationships that food builds between people and the land. The Artful Mornings series is built around these kinds of conversations, bringing museum members together with curators, scholars, and Indigenous artists to look closer at the museum's collections.
That collection is a good place to start. The Heard, right in the heart of Phoenix, holds more than 46,000 artworks across twelve galleries of American Indian art, ranging from traditional pieces to contemporary work. You'll find baskets, beadwork, Hopi Katsina dolls, jewelry, pottery, textiles, and sculpture. The series also gives members exclusive access to the permanent collection, and the museum shop carries hundreds of authentic pieces bought directly from American Indian artists.
