90-minute hands-on photography workshop led by a Phoenix Zoo volunteer photographer, learning composition and lighting to photograph the zoo's animals.
Animals in Focus is a photography class at the Phoenix Zoo on Wednesday, October 21, and it's a hands-on walkabout workshop rather than a lecture. You'll spend 90 minutes walking through the zoo with one of their expert volunteer photographers, who'll show you the basics of composition and lighting and how to apply them to the animals you'll see along the way. It's a good way to get some actual practice in a place where the subjects are already lined up for you.
If you're just starting out, the focus on composition and lighting covers the two things that usually make the difference between a snapshot and a photo you're actually proud to show people. You'll be working with the zoo's animal residents as your subjects, so you'll get to practice framing and light in real time. The class is for adults 18 and over only.
It's also part of a larger schedule: the class runs twice a month, on a Wednesday and a Saturday, from September 26 through December 30, 2026. Each session lasts 90 minutes, so if you can't make this one, there are plenty of other dates to choose from throughout the fall. The zoo itself is one of the largest non-profit zoos in the country, caring for more than 3,000 animals with nearly 400 species represented, including many threatened and endangered ones.
