Celebration marking the Acacia Library's Historic Preservation Overlay status, with the Sunnyslope Historical Society and Friends of the Phoenix Public Library.
Acacia Library is hosting a celebration of its new Historic Preservation Overlay status on Saturday, October 24, from 11 AM to 12 PM. The designation comes after a unanimous vote by the Phoenix City Council on September 9, 2026, and this event marks that milestone. It's being held in partnership with the Sunnyslope Historical Society and Friends of the Phoenix Public Library.
The morning is a tribute to the library's years of service to the community and to the legacy of its architect, Bennie M. Gonzales Associates. It's a chance to recognize the building as a local landmark and the role it's played in the neighborhood over the years.
Acacia is part of the Phoenix Public Library system, which includes 16 branch libraries, the Burton Barr Central Library, and a Bookmobile. Together they hold nearly two million books, DVDs, CDs, and video games, along with digital resources and thousands of programs for all ages. The system has a specific tradition of naming its locations after Arizona Sonoran Desert plants, and Acacia is one of them.
