Chamber concert by Duo Parisienne, with violin/viola Nancy Bean and harp Anne Sullivan, in The German Society of Pennsylvania's Wister and More! series.
Duo Parisienne play The German Society of Pennsylvania on Saturday, October 25, as part of the Wister and More! concert series. The duo is Nancy Bean on violin and viola, and Anne Sullivan on harp. It's a chamber pairing—strings and harp—which usually means a lighter, more intimate sound than what you'll find at the bigger halls in the city.
They're playing in the Barthelmes Auditorium, the Society's concert space at 611 Spring Garden Street. The German Society of Pennsylvania is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that runs German language classes alongside its cultural programming, so this concert sits within a broader community of language and music. The music program itself started more than twenty-five years ago through Dr. F. William Sundermann, a former board member and amateur musician, and was anchored for years by the Wister Quartet, a group of Philadelphia Orchestra members. Over that time, the Society has hosted renowned pianists like Maestros Sawallisch and Eschenbach. In 2014, they staged an opera composed by one of their own members to mark the Society's 250th anniversary, and the space now houses a new Bösendorfer Konzertflügel.
Bean and Sullivan bring two instruments each to the table: Bean handles both violin and viola, and Sullivan takes the harp. Between them, they cover the range of a small ensemble, and the Wister and More! series is the umbrella they're playing under.
