Workshop on family genealogy research led by Eboni Zamani of House of Zamani at the Wynnefield Library.
Eboni Zamani leads a workshop on family genealogy research at Wynnefield Library on Tuesday, October 20, at 4 PM. Zamani comes from House of Zamani, and the session is part of the Free Library of Philadelphia's Hyperlocal Heritage program.
The program itself has a specific origin story: it grew out of a 2026 project by Hosaena Tilahun, an Africana studies PhD student. Tilahun interviewed library staff about community archiving practices, and those conversations became a 15-minute documentary. This workshop is one of the events that followed.
The venue is the Wynnefield Branch, which serves the Wynnefield and Overbrook Farms neighborhoods. It sits next to the John C. Anderson Cultural Centre and near St Joseph's University. The area takes its name from Dr Thomas Wynne, a Welsh physician to William Penn and Speaker of Pennsylvania's first two provincial assemblies, who built his home, Wynnestay, in 1690 — 'stay' is Welsh for 'field.' The house still stands at the corner of 52nd and Woodbine. Around 1904, the Wynnefield Improvement Company built homes in the style of Wynnestay, and the branch opened in June 1964 following a campaign by the Wynnefield Residents Association. It re-opened in September 2000 after extensive technological upgrades.
