Piano duo recital by Timo Andres and Aaron Diehl featuring works by Ellington, Wolfe, Monk and others, including a Philadelphia premiere.
Timo Andres and Aaron Diehl are playing together at the Perelman Theater in the Kimmel Center on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. It's a duo recital that pulls from a few different worlds—jazz, classical, and new music—and it's part of the Elaine Kligerman Piano Recital Series presented by the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society.
The program is a wide one. They'll play Andres's How can I live in your world of ideas? and Pavane, and a Poulenc Sonata for Piano Four-Hands. There's also a Bach Concerto for Two Harpsichords in C Major (BWV 1061a), arranged for piano. The jazz side comes through with Tonk by Billy Strayhorn, arranged by Ellington and Strayhorn, and Green Chimneys by Thelonious Monk, arranged by Diehl. Andres also brings Monk Nocturnes, his own take on Monk. And there's a Philadelphia premiere: my lips from speaking by Julia Wolfe. The whole thing runs about an hour and 45 minutes, including intermission.
Andres is a composer and pianist who grew up in rural Connecticut and now lives in Brooklyn; this is his first appearance with PCMS. The San Francisco Chronicle described his playing as a "superb blend of crisp keyboard clarity and soft-edged lyricism," and he's drawing from his debut album, Shy and Mighty. Diehl has built his name on working the line between jazz and classical; The Guardian called his sound "traditional jazz with a sophisticated contemporary spin," and The New York Times noted his elegant pianism outside the contemporary mainstream. He's returning to PCMS after his 2024 debut.

It's a long program that moves between the two of them playing together and their own individual voices, and it's a good look at how they each approach the same tradition. The concert starts at 7:30 PM at the Perelman Theater, 300 South Broad Street. If you're interested in the teaching side of things, Diehl is also giving a masterclass at Settlement Music School on November 2, the day before the recital.
