The 15-piece Glenn Miller Orchestra plays its big-band classics, from 'In The Mood' to 'Moonlight Serenade', at The Theater at North.
The World-Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra plays The Theater at North on Tuesday, October 27, at 7 PM. It's a full-scale big band night in the middle of the week, and the lineup is exactly what the name suggests: a 15-member orchestra, lead singers, and a vocal group on stage together.
The set is built around the big-band catalog as it would have sounded over 80 years ago when Glenn Miller stood in front of his band. It leans on the classics that made the name known worldwide: In The Mood, Chattanooga Choo Choo, American Patrol, A String Of Pearls, Little Brown Jug, Pennsylvania 6-5000, Tuxedo Junction, and the orchestra's theme, Moonlight Serenade. Those are the songs most people recognize, and they're the ones that anchor the whole evening.
There's a bit of history to the group that's worth knowing. The orchestra has toured continuously since 1956, playing more than 200 concerts and dances a year. That means they've been on the road for seven decades, keeping the same big-band sound going long after the era that first made it famous. The 15-piece ensemble, the lead singers, and the vocal group all play their parts in the same way the original band did, so you're hearing the music as it was arranged and performed back then.
