A magical, family-friendly holiday ballet with snowfall and dancing flowers, a condensed 90-minute version of the classic Nutcracker with sensory-friendly features.
The Rock School for Dance brings The Enchanted Nutcracker to the Miller Theater on Saturday, December 5 and Sunday, December 6, 2026. It's a condensed, family-friendly version of the ballet classic, staged in two acts and running between 60 and 90 minutes. This year, an animated backdrop joins the traditional magical snowfall and dancing flowers.
The production follows the story of Clara, who receives a wooden Nutcracker from her Uncle Drosselmeyer. On Christmas Eve, it comes to life and leads her through a battle with the Mouse King and into the Land of the Sweets. The ballet itself is loosely based on E.T.A. Hoffmann's 1816 fantasy The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, set to Tchaikovsky's score with choreography by Petipa and Ivanov. It premiered in Russia in 1892 to little fanfare, found its audience in San Francisco in 1944, and became a holiday staple after New York City Ballet staged it in 1954.
One thing that sets this version apart is the sensory-friendly atmosphere. The sound levels are lowered, the lighting is softer, and there are no sudden blackouts or strobe effects. The stage stays slightly lit throughout, and light narration helps carry the story along, which makes it a good fit if you're bringing young kids or anyone who finds traditional theater a bit overwhelming. Between the shorter runtime and the sensory adjustments, it's built for families rather than the usual full-length ballet crowd.
