A jazz tribute concert to John Coltrane's legacy, performed by Tara Middleton and DM Hotep as part of the Coltrane100 Philly celebration.
Tara Middleton and Jupiter Blue play Holy Name of Jesus on Wednesday, October 21, as part of Coltrane100 Philly, the citywide celebration marking the centenary of John Coltrane's birth on September 23, 1926. Coltrane came of age here in Philadelphia, the city where he found his voice and launched a musical revolution, and this whole season of performances, exhibitions, education programming, and community events is built around that connection. The celebration culminates in November with a tribute to the 60th anniversary of his 1964 recording Offering: Live at Temple University.
On the night, Middleton and her collaborators take Coltrane's compositions as departure points and reopen them through voice, guitar, and responsive electronics. The lineup features Middleton on voice, DM Hotep on guitar, and Daniel Villarreal on drums. Both Middleton and Hotep are members of the Sun Ra Arkestra, so there's a shared history there that should come through in how they approach the material.
The broader celebration is made possible through Senator Vincent Hughes and the collaborative leadership of Jazz Philadelphia, Creative PHL, WRTI, and Ars Nova Workshop. It also includes the Coltrane100 Philly Community Project Grant for local jazz artists, so the whole thing is as much about the city's current jazz scene as it is about Coltrane himself.
