Operatic play by Opera Philadelphia, with music by Courtney Bryan, based on Tennessee Williams' one-act drama, with a reception at the Attico.
Opera Philadelphia is bringing Suddenly Last Summer to the Forrest Theater on Thursday, October 22, and the whole evening is more than just the show. The night is presented by the Mason Gross School of the Arts to welcome the school's new dean, Michael Kim, so it starts with a reception at Attico Rooftop Bar and Restaurant (219 S Broad Street) from 5:30 to 6:45 PM, with light appetizers and drinks. From there, the performance runs from 7 to 8 PM at the Forrest Theater, 1114 Walnut St.
Suddenly Last Summer is an operatic play based on Tennessee Williams' one-act Southern Gothic drama. The music was composed by Courtney Bryan, an alumnus of the Mason Gross School of the Arts (MM '07). It follows the tragic travels of Catharine Holly, and the story centers on the conflict between her desire to tell the truth and her powerful, wealthy aunt's determination to keep her quiet at any cost. The result is described as a fast-paced hybrid of music and theater, so it sits somewhere between a traditional opera and a staged play.
