Free music and sound program with local artists from BuildaBridge for students in grades 3 to 8, including songwriting, drumming and electronic music.
BuildaBridge brings another session of Sound Sessions to the Kensington Library on Saturday, October 17, from 2:30 to 4 PM. It's part of an eight-week series of experiential, music-based programs for students in grades 3 to 8, and it's free and open to the public.
The sessions aren't just about listening. Over the course of the series, the program covers songwriting, drumming and percussion circles, and electronic music, so kids get to actually make things rather than just watch. BuildaBridge frames its work around the power of the arts as a tool for healing and hope-raising, and that comes through in the hands-on approach. If you've got kids in that grade range, this is one of those things they can really get their hands on.
The host is the Kensington Branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia, located at 104 West Dauphin Street, near the York-Dauphin El station. It serves Kensington, West Kensington, and Norris Square, and it keeps Spanish-language materials on hand. The branch has been around since May 21, 1894, when it opened as the Frankford Avenue Branch (Branch Number 3) at 1856 Frankford Avenue; it took the Kensington name in 1900. The current building opened on July 20, 1956, and was renovated in 1997 as part of the 'Changing Lives' campaign. The meeting room where the sessions happen holds a mosaic designed by Network Arts with the help of neighborhood children.
