Theatre Contra stages a live reading of the 'Rocky' script to mark the film's 50th anniversary.
Theatre Contra is bringing Rocky to The Trestle Inn on Wednesday, December 16, for a live reading that marks 50 years of the Philadelphia classic. The show runs from 7 PM to 9 PM, and the company describes it as a Christmas movie, which puts it right in the middle of the holiday season.
It's a live reading, so the script is read aloud rather than fully staged, but the production keeps the parts of the story that make it what it is: the training montages and the action scenes are all there, brought to life on stage. The goal is to stay true to the original, so you'll get the same beats you remember from the film.
The timing fits into a bigger picture for the state. Pennsylvania is leaning into 2026 as the semiquincentennial of the founding of the United States, and the wider statewide commemoration, America250PA, ties the year to the Declaration of Independence announced in the Assembly Room of Independence Hall on July 4, 1776. Pennsylvania was the second state to ratify the U.S. Constitution in 1787. As part of that, a time capsule was buried to be unearthed on America's 500th anniversary on July 4, 2276.
