Curated art pop performance with live drawing, cello and electronics by Morgan Myers and Ricki Weidenhof, followed by an Open Improvisation Lab.
Morgan Myers and Ricki Weidenhof play The Living Signal on Tuesday, October 20, as part of a curated art pop performance that pairs two very different kinds of mark-making. Myers is an internationally renowned tattoo artist; Weidenhof is a cellist with what the organizers call freaked-out art pop sensibilities. The set is curated by Alex Lough, and the duo is rounded out with live drawing and electronics.
It's a strange pairing on paper—a tattoo artist and a cellist—but that's exactly the point. The performance is part of a weekly series presented by People's Music Supply in collaboration with The Living Signal, and every curated show is followed by an Open Improvisation Lab (OIL). That's the second half of the night: the lab sorts participating audience members into groups through chance procedures, divine inspiration, and bespoke sorting systems to extract music from the unique temporal aspects of the ether. All levels, all backgrounds, and all disciplines are welcome, so you don't have to be a musician to get involved.

If you're just coming for the performance, you'll see Myers' amplified mark-making alongside Weidenhof's cello, with the live drawing and electronics filling in the gaps. If you stay for the lab, you might end up in one of those chance-sorted groups yourself. The whole thing runs from 7 PM to 10 PM, with doors opening at 7 PM, at The Living Signal, 4311 Lancaster Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19104.
