The Philadelphia Orchestra performs works by Mozart, Mendelssohn, Chin, and Schumann, conducted by Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider.
The Philadelphia Orchestra plays Marian Anderson Hall at The Kimmel Center on January 15 and 16, 2027, with Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider on the podium and leading from the violin. It's part of their 2026-27 season, which is Music and Artistic Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin's 15th year with the orchestra.
The program pairs Mozart and Schumann, both at the height of their powers. Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 2 was one of only four he wrote in a single year, when he was 19. Schumann's Symphony No. 3, known as the Rhenish, captures the awe he felt when he first visited the Cologne Cathedral. Between them, the orchestra plays Mendelssohn's Overture to Ruy Blas and subito con forza, a five-minute piece by South Korean composer Unsuk Chin. The whole thing runs about an hour and 45 minutes, including intermission.
It's a busy season for the orchestra. They're coming off their 125th anniversary, and the 2026-27 schedule includes world premieres by Composer-in-Residence Joe Hisaishi, as well as Reena Esmail and Valerie Coleman. The Kimmel Center, which has been the orchestra's home since December 2001, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.
