Gently paced introductory yoga class for beginners covering postures, breath work and relaxation, with chair and standing adaptations.
Mindful Yoga Basics is back at the Fumo Family Library on Friday, October 23, at 3 PM. It's a gently paced, compassionately led class for people new to yoga or looking for a gentle introduction, and it's part of the Free Library of Philadelphia's Health and Wellness series.
The class covers the basics—postures, breath, and relaxation tools—in a warm and welcoming setting. You'll find adaptations for different levels, including seated-in-a-chair and standing versions of poses to build strength and flexibility, and guidance on the proper use of props. There's mindful breath work to calm and focus the mind, and relaxation practices to reduce stress, along with a basic understanding of yoga's benefits and the philosophy supporting the practice. Instruction is step-by-step, with time for questions, reflection, and feedback.
The class is held at the Fumo Family Library, 2437 South Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19148-3508. It's a bright yellow building that opened in 1999 on the site of the former Ritner Children's Branch, which itself stood on land that had been a Swedish family farm for more than 200 years before Broad Street took its name from William Penn.
