Workshop for young Black men on leadership, conflict resolution and writing about their future selves.
Mighty Brotherhood meets at the Widener Library on Monday, October 26, at 3 PM. It's a workshop for young Black men—teens and young adults—built around a single question: what does it mean to be the best young Black man you can be?
The session covers a wide range of ground, from the practical to the personal. One part is about the basics, like how to tie a tie; another focuses on conflict resolution and leadership. And then there's the writing: the group writes together about their future selves, putting on paper the kind of man each of them wants to become.
The venue is the Widener Branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia, at 2808 West Lehigh Avenue (28th and Lehigh), which serves the North Central Philadelphia, Strawberry Mansion, and Allegheny West communities. The branch is themed around the African Plains, with abstract elephants and giraffes hidden in the design and four youth areas: Preschool Plains, School-Age Savanna, Pre-Teen Plateau, and Teen Terrain. It's a glass-fronted building that opened on January 31, 2005, designed by architects Buell, Kratzer, and Powell. The branch's history goes back further, to 1900, when the H. Josephine Widener Branch opened in the Widener Mansion as a gift from Peter A.B. Widener in memory of his wife.
