Free dedication of a mural by Cesar Viveros at Mary Field Senior Apartments, with food, music and community activities.
Mural Arts Philadelphia is dedicating a new mural at the Mary Field Senior Apartments on Friday, November 6, from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM. The piece is by master muralist Cesar Viveros, and the dedication is a celebration of the collaboration between Viveros and the Mary Field community. It's organized by Mural Arts along with Pennsylvania Housing Affordability and Rehabilitation Enhancement (PHARE).
The mural itself is six stories tall, taking over the side of the senior center. It was inspired by a garden that serves as a sanctuary for residents of HumanGood's four-building campus in Kingsessing, and it brings that inside out, filling the wall with natural imagery and portraits of Mary Field residents. The people who live there didn't just watch it go up; they shaped the project through a community-wide paint day and a series of poetry workshops led by poet and spoken word artist Ursula Rucker. The poetry they wrote during the design process was published as a collection, and that writing is woven into the work.
