Curio Theatre Company's production of Jose Rivera's dystopian play about a Puerto Rican copy editor navigating a collapsing New York City.
Curio Theatre Company is bringing Marisol to the Curio Theatre from March 31 through April 17, as part of their 2026/27 season. It's a surreal, apocalyptic drama written by JosΓ© Rivera back in 1989, and it's one of the centerpieces of the company's 22nd season.
The play follows Marisol Perez, a young Puerto Rican copy editor whose life gets turned upside down when her guardian angel abandons her to join a celestial war against a dying God. From there, things go from the personal to the cosmic: the moon disappears, the air turns toxic, and society starts to collapse around her. Marisol ends up navigating a dystopian New York City, searching for hope, survival, and some kind of human connection while the world falls apart. It's a story that starts with one woman and expands into a larger look at compassion, resilience, and what it means to stay human in a crisis.
Curio's Artistic Director Paul Kuhn has called it a "modern masterpiece," and that's a good way to frame itβit's a play that's been around for decades but still feels relevant, especially in how it balances the surreal with the deeply personal. If you're into theater that doesn't play it safe and isn't afraid to go to some strange, dark places, this is exactly that kind of show.
