French early music ensemble Le Concert de l'Hostel Dieu brings to life lost 18th-century Baroque arias inspired by the legend of Hamlet, with soprano Roberta Mameli.
Le Concert de l'Hostel Dieu is coming to the Philadelphia Episcopal Cathedral on Thursday, April 8, 2027, at 7 PM. The French ensemble is known for reinvigorating early masterpieces, and this program is built around the 12th-century Danish legend of Prince Hamlet—the same story that inspired Shakespeare's tragedy, but also several 18th-century Italian operas that were long considered lost.
Those rediscovered Baroque arias are the core of the evening. They're by Scarlatti, Gasparini, Carcani, and Vignati, and they bring to life three figures from the story: Veremonda, Shakespeare's Ophelia, and Gerilda, Hamlet's mother Gertrude. It's a rare chance to hear these pieces out loud rather than just reading about them in a music history book, and they're performed by soprano Roberta Mameli.
Gramophone described the result as a "harmonious kinship of intriguing repertoire and felicitous musical expressivity," which is a fancy way of saying the program works as well as it sounds. The group travels here from France, and the whole thing is built on the idea of taking music that had effectively disappeared and giving it a second life.
