Free art club at the Lawncrest Library for all ages and skill levels to practice, share techniques and spark ideas.
Lawncrest Library is hosting its Art Club on Saturday, October 24, at 11 AM. It's part of the Free Library of Philadelphia's Arts and Crafts Programmes, and it's open to all ages and skill levels, from beginners to experienced artists, with teens welcome. The club is a supportive space to grow your artistic skills, practice, share techniques, and spark new ideas alongside other creatives.
If you can't make this one, there are a few more sessions coming up: Saturday, November 7, and Saturday, December 19, both at 11 AM. There's also a Friday session on October 30 at 11 AM, so you've got a few different days to choose from if Saturdays don't work for you. It's a free program, and you're welcome to drop in for one session or stick with it through the fall.
The venue itself has a bit of a story. The Lawncrest Branch opened on September 18, 1961, and came about because of activism by Lawndale and Crescentville residents who had been limited to weekly bookmobile visits. In March 1957, Mildred Pruitt launched a campaign for a branch library, founded the Lawn-Crest Library Association, and organized community meetings and a petition drive. The building sits on city-owned land next to the Lawncrest Recreation Center; it was renovated in 2000 as part of the 'Changing Lives' campaign, and on June 10, 2017, it received a mural by Mural Arts Philadelphia artist Nathaniel Lee honoring fallen firefighter Lt. Joyce Craig, who died in the line of duty in 2014.
