Evening workshop to make kokedama, suspended moss balls, at the Morris Arboretum & Gardens Visitor Center.
Morris Arboretum & Gardens is hosting a Kokedama Workshop on Wednesday, November 4, from 6 PM to 8 PM. The session takes place at the Visitor Center, so you'll be right in the heart of the arboretum for the whole thing.
If you're not familiar with the term, kokedama is a Japanese botanical art where a plant's root ball is wrapped in a sphere of soil and moss, then bound with string. Instead of a traditional pot, the plant lives in its own self-contained ball of earth. It's a hands-on process—you'll be working with soil, moss, and twine to shape the sphere and secure the plant inside—and you leave with your own finished kokedama to take home. The workshop runs for two hours, which gives you plenty of time to get your hands dirty and figure out the technique without having to rush through it.
It's a good fit if you've been wanting to try your hand at something botanical but aren't sure where to start. You don't need to be a gardener to get it; the whole point of a workshop like this is that you're guided through the steps from start to finish. Since it's held at the Visitor Center, you're in a dedicated space for the activity, and you'll be surrounded by other people doing the same thing, which makes it a low-pressure way to spend a Wednesday evening.
