Big band jazz concert by John Vanore & Abstract Truth at Chris' Jazz Cafe.
John Vanore & Abstract Truth play Chris' Jazz Cafe on Thursday, October 15, with sets at 7:30 PM and 9:00 PM. The group is a 13-piece big band, and they call themselves "the big band for big band junkies."
Vanore is a trumpeter, composer, educator, and record producer with a career spanning more than four decades. He picked up the trumpet at seven and later attended a summer program at Indiana University directed by Oliver Nelson, the experience that pushed him toward a life in music. He went on to serve as Director of Music at Widener University, where he built a jazz ensemble program and was named Artist in Residence.
In the 1980s he formed Abstract Truth, the large ensemble that'll be on stage. They released albums like Blue Route and Curiosity, and Vanore has produced records for EMI, Atlantic, PBS, and Miramax. In 2004 he was commissioned to write Suite for Bhopal, a five-movement work marking the 20th anniversary of the Bhopal tragedy. He also reimagined Oliver Nelson's music on Stolen Moments - Celebrating Oliver Nelson and released live recordings by Abstract Truth, Back to School and Divergence, after finding tapes long thought lost.
