Pianist Jeremy Denk performs a recital featuring works by Beethoven, Hélène de Montgeroult and Unsuk Chin, with a pre-concert talk by Lesley Valdes.
Jeremy Denk plays the Perelman Theater at the Kimmel Center on Wednesday, January 13, 2027. It's a solo recital, part of the Elaine Kligerman Piano Recital Series, which the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society uses as its home for solo recitals by leading pianists. Denk is one of the country's most recognized pianists, a MacArthur "Genius" Fellow and Avery Fisher Prize winner, and a New York Times bestselling author. He's also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
The program spans a wide stretch of time and style. He opens with selected Études by Hélène de Montgeroult, a French composer who worked across the gap between the Classical and Romantic eras. Then comes Beethoven's Sonata in D Minor Op. 31 No. 2, better known as The Tempest. After that, he moves to the contemporary: Études No. 1-6 by Unsuk Chin, the Korean-born composer. He closes with Beethoven's Sonata in A-flat Major Op. 110. It's a program that puts the two Beethoven sonatas in conversation with etudes from two very different centuries.
