Workshop for adults and seniors on spotting AI-generated text, audio and video and avoiding common AI scams.
Is This for Real? AI Scams is coming to the Dwight Evans Library of West Oak Lane on Monday, October 19, at 2 PM. It's a workshop on spotting AI scams, part of the library's Community Impact Week series, and it's aimed at adults and seniors. If you've been hearing about AI and feeling a little uneasy about what's real and what isn't, this is exactly the kind of thing to show up for.
The session walks you through how to tell the difference between real and AI-generated text, audio, and video. It goes over common AI scams and 'hallucinations'—those moments when an AI confidently makes something up—and gives practical advice on how to protect yourself from them. It's not just about the theory; it's about the actual signs to look for when you're not sure if a message, a voice, or a video is the real thing.
The venue itself has a bit of a story. The West Oak Lane branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia opened on August 26, 1957, and drew 2,000 visitors in its first hour. It was almost entirely destroyed by fire in 1980 and reopened in 1985, then renovated in 2000 as part of the 'Changing Lives' campaign that brought internet access to every branch. The neighborhood was named West Oak Lane in 1925 and was once farmland made up of the settlements of Pleasantville, Cedar Park, and Pittville. If you're hanging around the picture book area, you'll find abstract mask-form sculptures by artist Charles Searles, which reflect his American, African, and Native American heritage.
