A photography exhibition by Paolo Morales exploring community in Kensington, featuring black-and-white portraits and colour photographs by local residents.
Inside Outside is on view throughout October at UV Space, 2731 Kensington Ave, in Kensington. It's a photography exhibition by Paolo Morales, put together as part of Mural Arts Philadelphia's Heart of Kensington Creates initiative, in collaboration with Councilperson Quetcy Lozada's Office and Impact Services.
The show brings together two very different sets of images. One half comes from Memphis Tulips, a series of black-and-white portraits Morales has been working on for ten years. They're portraits of Kensington residents who are struggling but still taking care of one another. The other half consists of color photographs taken by local residents in response to a prompt: "What does community look and feel like in photographs?" Those were made in collaboration with The Simple Way.
Morales is a New York City native who approaches the documentary tradition from his position as an Asian American man. He's had eight solo exhibitions and numerous group shows, and his work has appeared in VICE, Papersafe, The Washington Post, Dazed, and The New Yorker. Here, his long-term project sits side by side with the images Kensington residents took themselves, so you get to see the neighborhood from two directions at once.
