British early music vocal ensemble I Fagiolini marks its 40th anniversary with a Philadelphia debut of Monteverdi's secular and sacred works, 'Il divino Claudio'.
I Fagiolini are making their Philadelphia debut at the Philadelphia Episcopal Cathedral on Thursday, February 25, 2027. It's a big one for the group: they're Britain's renowned early music vocal ensemble, and this is their first time performing in the city. It's also their first U.S. appearance in more than ten years, so it's a return to the States as much as a first for Philly.
The program is Il divino Claudio, built around the secular and sacred works of Claudio Monteverdi. If you're not familiar with him, Monteverdi is one of the giants of the early Baroque, and he's the central figure here. The ensemble performs a cappella, and The Guardian described their Monteverdi as delivering "startlingly intense surround-sound baroque," which gives you a good sense of what to expect: voices alone, working in a space like the Cathedral.
There's a bit of a milestone behind the tour, too. I Fagiolini is marking its 40th anniversary, and this performance is part of that celebration. The concert is presented by Penn Live Arts, and it's one of the few times this particular program will be in the city.
