Win Wells' play about the ghost of Gertrude Stein returning to her partner Alice B. Toklas, set in their Parisian apartment during a cultural revolution.
Gertrude Stein and a Companion, written by Win Wells, runs from March 16 through April 4, 2027, at the Walnut Street Theatre. It's playing in the Independence Studio on 3, the smaller space inside the main theater at 825 Walnut Street.
The play starts with a ghost: Gertrude Stein has died and returned to her long-term partner, Alice B. Toklas. The two spend the show reflecting on their life together, set in their Parisian apartment during a cultural revolution. It's a look at the art, music, and love of their time, and the way they lived it together. The production is described as an award-winning best play that transports the audience into the atmosphere of an unconventional artistic life.
If you're not familiar with the real-life Stein and Toklas, they were at the center of the modernist movement in Paris, hosting some of the most famous writers and artists of the early twentieth century in that same apartment. The play keeps them in that setting, letting them look back on the world they helped shape.
