Jazz concert featuring world-renowned bassist Gerald Veasley and singer-songwriter Raul Midón at South Kitchen & Jazz Parlor.
Gerald Veasley plays South Kitchen & Jazz Parlor on Thursday, October 15, with Raul Midón joining him on stage. Veasley is a Philadelphia native, a six-string electric bassist and bandleader who's built his career right here in the city. He's known for playing the six-string bass, which gives him a wider range than a standard four-string and lets him cover both the low end and the melodic lines in a single instrument.
Raul Midón is a Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter and guitarist whose work pulls from jazz, soul, folk and pop. The New York Times once described him as a three-way fusion of Stevie Wonder, Bobby McFerrin and José Feliciano, which gives you a fair idea of what he brings to the table: a strong voice, a guitar part, and a knack for blending those styles. He's worked with Bill Withers, Herbie Hancock and Spike Lee, and his 2024 album Lost & Found is what he calls his smooth folk sound.
With Veasley on the six-string bass and Midón handling vocals and guitar, the two cover a lot of ground between them. Veasley's bass work holds down the low end and takes the lead, while Midón adds the singing and the guitar on top. It's a pairing that puts the bass and the voice front and center, with Midón's folk-leaning style meeting Veasley's jazz roots.
