An improvised guitar performance by three interdisciplinary artists, treating sound as a material to explore memory and place, alongside Hopinka's installation 'Red Metal Dust'.
Sky Hopinka, Raven Chacon and Andrew Yong Hoon Lee play an improvised guitar set at The Barnes on Friday, December 4, as part of the museum's First Friday series. The performance runs from 6:30 to 8 PM in Annenberg Court, with the full event open from 6 to 9 PM.
It's an improvised piece, so there's no setlist to lean on. The three treat sound as a material, shaping the music in real time as they respond to each other and the room. They describe listening as a way of moving between sound, memory and place, and the whole thing is staged alongside Hopinka's installation Red Metal Dust.
That interdisciplinary background is where the night gets its weight. All three work across different fields—photography, composition, experimental cinema, installation and performance—and they bring that sensibility to the guitars. The performance is part of a social evening, with cocktails and light fare available and the Garden Restaurant open for dinner. Your ticket also gets you into the Barnes collection and the exhibition Noguchi to Asawa: Designing Postwar America.
