Gypsy jazz concert by the Django Festival Allstars, a group of top musicians in the Django Reinhardt tradition, at the Perelman Theater.
Django Festival Allstars play the Perelman Theater at The Kimmel Center on Friday, May 14, 2027, at 7:30 PM. The group is built around the music of Django Reinhardt, the legendary guitarist whose cool, jumping joie de vivre made him an icon for generations of artists across genres. His influence reached far beyond jazz: Les Paul and Chet Atkins took it into early electric guitar; Jerry Garcia, Carlos Santana and Eric Clapton carried it into rock; Jimi Hendrix named his 'big band of gypsies' in tribute; and Willie Nelson brought it into country-swing.
This particular lineup features Samson Schmitt, Ludovic Beier and Pierre Blanchard, all of whom come from the Gypsy Jazz tradition. They play as direct-lineage inheritors of Reinhardt's style, and the set is a homage to him. It's energetic, built on dazzling improvisations and swinging rhythms that call back to Paris in the 1920s and '30s, and it's a tribute to the genre's history rather than a museum piece. They've played to standing ovations at SFJazz, the Kennedy Center, Birdland, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Hollywood Bowl, the Montreal Jazz Festival and Carnegie Hall.
