Emerging Haitian-American jazz vocalist Danielle Angrand performs with her quartet in an intimate setting at Velvet Whip.
Danielle Angrand brings her quartet to Velvet Whip Arts & Social Club on Friday, October 30, for a two-hour set from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. Angrand is a Haitian-American jazz vocalist and mezzo-soprano, a YoungArts-recognized singer who's currently studying vocal performance at Morgan State University. Her work moves between straight-ahead jazz and her classical training, and she's shared the stage with some heavy hitters: Buster Williams, Joe Farnsworth, Warren Wolf, and Emmet Cohen.
Critics have pointed to her rich, smooth tone and the emotional maturity she brings to standards like "Misty," "Georgia," and "Nice Work If You Can Get It." Those are the kinds of songs that rely on a singer's phrasing and control rather than just hitting the notes, and that's where the mezzo-soprano side of her training comes into play. The quartet format gives her a full band to work with, so you'll get the full ensemble sound rather than just a singer and a piano.
