An art-making workshop for people with Parkinson's disease and their care partners, featuring slow-looking exercises and mindfulness activities inspired by Van Gogh.
Barnes Create & Connect returns to The Barnes on Saturday, October 31, from 10 AM to noon. This session is the final workshop of the autumn edition, and the theme is Visual Stories through Van Gogh.
If you haven't come across it before, Create & Connect is part of the Barnes Foundation's art, health, and wellness programs, run in partnership with the Parkinson Council. It's designed for people living with Parkinson's disease and their care partners. Each session follows the same two-part format: it starts in the galleries, where staff lead the group through slow-looking exercises, moments of mindfulness, and conversations around selected works. After that, everyone moves into a hands-on art-making experience led by a teaching artist. You don't need any prior art experience to join in, and light snacks and beverages are provided.
Since the theme is Visual Stories through Van Gogh, the first half will center on Van Gogh's work within the collection. The Barnes houses one of the world's finest collections of impressionist, post-impressionist, and modern painting, including the largest groups of works by Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Paul Cézanne in existence. The foundation was established in 1922 by Dr. Albert C. Barnes, a pioneering collector and educator who was a fierce advocate for the civil rights of African Americans, women, and the economically marginalized, and who became actively involved in the Harlem Renaissance. Since moving to Philadelphia in 2012, the Barnes has expanded its commitment to diversity, inclusion, and social justice.
