BalletX presents three contemporary ballet works: Speakeasy, Switching the Groove, and In the Wake.
BalletX returns to the Suzanne Roberts Theatre with its Fall Series, running November 4 through 15. It's a triple bill of contemporary ballet, and it comes at a bit of a milestone: the company celebrated its 20th anniversary last season, so this series is their first step into whatever comes next.
The program opens with Speakeasy, a world premiere from Loughlan Prior. It's a theatrical, glamorous romp through Prohibition-era Philadelphia, and it follows Macaroni, the 2024 hit that The Philadelphia Inquirer called "a wildly entertaining ride." Next is Switching the Groove, re-mounted by Amy Hall Garner, an electrifying fusion of dance styles that first debuted at Festival at Highmark Mann in 2023. The third piece is In the Wake by Christian Denice, the company's 2025 Choreographic Fellow, a soulful meditation on resilience and healing set to an original score by pianist Philip Daniel.
Across the three works, contemporary ballet blends with jazz, all backed by an original score from UK-based composer and multi-instrumentalist Frank Moon, who's worked with the Royal Ballet and on films like Disney's Aladdin and Marvel's Eternals. The costumes and set designs come from theater designer Emma Kingsbury.
