Annual lecture by the Rt Hon Lord Hague of Richmond, Chancellor of the University of Oxford, on the economic, security and technological challenges facing Europe.
The Rt Hon Lord Hague of Richmond delivers The Europaeum Annual Lecture 2026 at the Sheldonian Theatre on Wednesday 4 November, from 5:00 to 6:30pm. The lecture is the flagship speaking event of The Europaeum, a network of European universities, and this year's edition comes from one of its own: Lord Hague is the Chancellor of the University of Oxford and a Trustee of the network.
He'll be addressing the economic, security and technological challenges facing Europe today, and he doesn't stop at the broad strokes. He argues that the future of the UK remains closely bound to the fortunes of Europe as a whole, and he sets out his ideas for resilience and renewal, with the role of universities and their soft power at the centre of it all. It's a wide-ranging brief — economics, security and tech in one go — so it's the kind of talk that touches on a few different things at once rather than sticking to one narrow topic.

The Sheldonian Theatre on Broad Street is a unique setting for it, and it hosts a rich programme of concerts, talks and lectures throughout the year. This one is open to the public, so you don't need to be part of the university or the network to get in. If you want to be there in person, you'll need a free ticket via Eventbrite. If you can't make it into town, it's streamed live on the Europaeum YouTube channel, so you can follow along from home instead. It runs from 5:00 to 6:30pm on Wednesday 4 November, with the in-person ticket free and the online stream available for anyone joining from afar.
