Hands-on workshop by IF Oxford in which participants extract copper from ore and examine rocks to uncover the chemistry behind the colours of stained glass.
The Chemistry of Colour is an interactive workshop at Modern Art Oxford on Thursday 22 October, from 6:00 to 7:30 pm. It's run by IF Oxford, the city's science and ideas festival, and it takes place inside the gallery itself, where you'll work around the venue's own furniture to get at the chemistry behind the vibrant colours of stained glass.
The session traces those hues back to the extraction of metals from ores, and it's hands-on: you'll get to extract copper yourself and examine rocks and ores, drawing a line from ancient mining to contemporary art. There's a direct link to the space you're in, too — Emma Hart's coloured glass tables are on display at the gallery, so the chemistry you're working through is the same one that produced them.
IF Oxford is the city's science and ideas festival, and it's built by hundreds of people from academic research groups, local businesses and cultural communities across Oxford. It's run as an independent charity, so the whole thing is a community effort rather than a corporate production.
