Members-only talk by Anna Eavis on Edward Burne-Jones' stained-glass designs, with examples from the Ashmolean's collections.
Anna Eavis is talking about Edward Burne-Jones' stained glass on Thursday 12 November at the Ashmolean Museum, and if you've spent any time in Oxford's churches, you've probably seen his work without even realising it.
Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was one of the UK's most accomplished painters and designers, and he worked alongside his friend William Morris across almost every medium — textiles, mosaic, jewellery, and stained glass. He's regarded as perhaps the country's most prolific and influential stained-glass designer, with thousands of window designs for churches, chapels, and houses across Britain and beyond. This talk focuses on his Oxford work, including glass at Christ Church Cathedral, St Edmund's Hall, and Harris Manchester Chapel, and draws on drawings from the Ashmolean's own collections. Eavis is the Chief Executive of the Oxford Preservation Trust, so she knows the city's built heritage inside out.
