Cabaret show by The Cocoa Butter Club, a Cassie Leon production about identity and belonging, part of the 'Utopia Now!' season at the Schwarzman Centre.
The Cocoa Butter Club bring their cabaret show SANKOFA to the Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities on Friday 6 and Saturday 7 November, both nights starting at 7.00pm. It's a Cassie Leon production, and the two dates sit within Utopia Now!, a season at the centre that looks at the role of the arts in making a better future possible.
SANKOFA centres on identity and belonging, and it frames itself around Black, Queer and unapologetically 'Cocoa Butter' voices. The club itself was founded in 2016 as a creative response to cultural appropriation, lack of representation and imitation, and has built its reputation on showcasing and celebrating performers of colour. This particular show is produced and directed by Cassie Leon, with choreography by Demi Noire.
On stage, the night is hosted by vocalist Darkwah, with performers Donna Divine, Rei and Conn. The whole thing runs for about an hour and a half, including the interval. There's an age guidance of 16+, and the show may contain nudity and strong language.
