World-premiere collaboration in which pianist Clare Hammond plays Rachmaninov's Second Piano Sonata while a new film by the Quay Brothers is screened.
Clare Hammond and the Quay Brothers are coming to the Stephen A. Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities on Tuesday 23 February 2027, and it's a world premiere. The two are teaming up for a new film built around Rachmaninov's Second Piano Sonata, which Hammond will be performing. It's a collaboration between music and film, so you'll have the piano and the screen running together rather than one just accompanying the other.
The screening is part of the Schwarzman Centre's second season, which runs from January to July 2027. It's a broad programme covering music, dance, theatre, visual art, film and literature, with many of the projects commissioned and developed alongside Oxford University researchers. The Quay Brothers' work with Hammond fits right into that mix of performance and research.
The season also features the centre's Cultural Fellows, among them choreographer Wayne McGregor, whose research on turning inner bodily signals into choreographic cues feeds into the work Tenderness Data, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma, who takes up a mini-residency. So if you're planning to head in for this, there's plenty more to see around it over the course of the season.
