Free concert by violinist Borislava Iltcheva and organist Jacob Benda pairing Vaughan Williams' 'The Lark Ascending' and Saint-Saƫns' 'The Carnival of the Animals'.
Music at Mansfield returns to the Mansfield College Chapel on Saturday 24 October, with Of Birds and Beasts bringing together two of classical music's best-known animal pieces. It's the sixth concert in the college's professional termly series, which runs once a term and is open to the public.
The programme pairs Vaughan Williams' The Lark Ascending with Saint-SaĆ«ns' The Carnival of the Animals, both performed on violin and organ. The two pieces share a theme ā birds and beasts ā and together they make up the bulk of the evening. The whole thing runs for about an hour and goes straight through without an interval.
The performers are coming from across the Atlantic. Bulgarian violinist Borislava Iltcheva is currently concert master of the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra, and American organist Jacob Benda is Organ Area Professor and Director of Sacred Music, Liturgy and Sacred Arts at the University of St Thomas in St Paul, Minnesota. They'll be playing in the college chapel, one of Oxford's finest neo-Gothic spaces.

Behind the scenes, the series is funded by donations from an anonymous individual and support from alumnus Mr Jan Fischer (PPE, 1987), as part of the college's artistic offering to the city and the wider community. The concert is free of charge to the public and to Mansfield College members. It runs from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Chapel, Mansfield College, Mansfield Road, Oxford.
