Immersive physical theatre and interactive installation by MECHANIMAL that turns the museum into a wild encounter with rock, sound and light.
MECHANIMAL bring Megalith to the Oxford University Museum of Natural History from 24 to 31 October, an immersive installation that runs throughout the week and peaks with a live performance on Saturday night. It's part physical theatre, part interactive exhibit, and it centres on mining and the critical raw materials we dig out of the ground.
For most of the run, you wander through it at your own pace. There's a giant stone circle you can walk around while lights dance across the space, and a station where you can mine stone with antlers, like a Neolithic miner. You can also stop and listen to the slow rumble of rocks. It's designed to be an encounter with rock, sound, and light, and the company describes it as a "fun, loud and lyrical smash-fest."
Then there's the performance on Saturday 31 October, from 19:30 to 21:00. That's when a performer and a sound artist go head-to-head to deep-time techno and metamorphic soundscapes, with projection design by Limbic Cinema and geological commentary from Professor Jon Blundy. If you're only going once, that's the night to pick.
Every week we pick 🏆 the 5 best 🏆 things to do in Oxford and send them to your inbox. Just one weekly email, no spam.
