Lunchtime talk by Sharron Jenkinson on the Welsh migration to Oxford through the history of the Oxford Welsh Male Voice Choir.
Sharron Jenkinson is at the Museum of Oxford on Wednesday 11 November for a lunchtime talk on the Welsh migration to Oxford, told through the history of the Oxford Welsh Male Voice Choir. Jenkinson is a history teacher and the choir's archivist and events organiser, so she knows the story from the inside.
The choir started in the depression years, when Welsh men travelled to Oxford to find work at Morris Motors and Pressed Steel, and their families followed. The talk traces that migration through the choir's life, and the title comes from a 1938 Oxford Mail cartoon: You can't stop them singing! It sums up how much singing mattered to that community. By 2018 the choir had celebrated its 90th year, and more is now sung in Welsh than in the 1930s; it remains an important part of Oxford's cultural and musical scene.
