Solo exhibition by artist John Day of small oil portraits and figure paintings, editioned prints and mounted life drawings spanning 25 years.
John Day is showing a selection of his work at The Little Gallery on Broad Street, and it's one of those exhibitions that stays open long enough to fit around your schedule rather than forcing you to rush in. It runs from 2 October through to 31 October, so you've got the whole month to drop by when it suits.
What makes this one worth a look is the range on display. Day has pulled together work spanning 25 years, and he's hanging small oil portraits and figure paintings alongside editioned artist prints and mounted life drawings. It's a solo show that works across drawing, painting and printmaking all at once, so you get to see how he handles different mediums in the same room.
There are a couple of specific pieces that stand out. Looking at Gwen John (Portrait of Philip) is from this year, 2026, so it's fresh from the easel. On the other end of the timeline is Loki Asleep, which dates back to 2004 — a good example of how far back this selection goes. Between those two, you'll find the portraits, the life studies and the animal paintings mentioned in the summary, with the smaller oil works sitting right next to the prints and drawings.

If you're thinking of taking something home, some of the work is available to purchase. The gallery is at 20 Broad Street, upstairs in Broad Canvas, and entry is free, so there's no need to book or pay anything to have a look. It runs until 31 October, giving you plenty of time to catch it.
