A multilingual conversation with a European Parliament interpreter and the Oxford University Language Centre director on interpreting, creativity and careers.
Interpret THAT! How an ancient craft supports democracy in 24 languages is on at the Shulman Auditorium, The Queen's College, on Friday 23 October. It's a multilingual conversation about interpreting, creativity and careers, run by the Queen's Translation Exchange. The evening looks at plurilingualism and democracy, what it means to interpret and to be interpreted, and the international importance of language learning in the twenty-first century.
Two people lead the discussion. Matthew Perret is a conference interpreter at the European Parliament, working from French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan and Galician into English, and from English into Spanish. He's also a pedagogical advisor for the EP Interpreting Academies and has lectured in interpreting at several UK and EU universities. He holds a BA in Modern Languages from The Queen's College, Oxford, from 1989, and is a writer and performer who has appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe. Marion Sadoux, Director of the Oxford University Language Centre, is a trained Public Service Interpreter with over twenty years of experience in higher education. Dr Charlotte Ryland introduces the session.
The Queen's Translation Exchange was founded by Supernumerary Fellow Dr Charlotte Ryland, who is also Director of the Stephen Spender Trust, a charity promoting language learning and literary translation. The evening is open to everyone, not just people working in translation or languages.
