Artist Hayden Dunham explores new methods of materiality in a free talk at the Ruskin School of Art.
Hayden Dunham will be at the Ruskin School of Art on Tuesday 20 October, talking about their work in a session titled Skipping the Liquid: Sublimation as Practice. It's a chance to hear them talk through their process in person, rather than just seeing the finished pieces on a wall.
During the talk, Dunham will elaborate on their practice of exploring new methods of materiality. The title itself, Skipping the Liquid, points to the central theme: sublimation, the process where a substance goes from a solid to a gas without ever becoming a liquid. It's a scientific term, but here it's being used as a way of thinking about how to work with materials and the different states they can take. If you've ever wondered how an artist actually arrives at a particular way of making things, this is exactly the kind of thing they'll be getting into.
It's a talk, not a gallery opening, so the focus is on the 'how' and 'why' behind the work. Dunham will be explaining their approach to materiality and the specific methods they've been developing, giving you a look at the thinking that goes into the making. If you're interested in the technical side of art — the materials, the processes, and the experimentation that happens before anything ever reaches a frame — this is right up that alley.
