Piano recital by Harry Bowden of the Royal Academy of Music with Beethoven's Sonata in C Op. 111, Scriabin's Sonata No. 5 and Chopin Nocturnes.
Harry Bowden is playing a piano recital at St Andrew's Church, Headington on Saturday 24 October, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. He's a student at the Royal Academy of Music, and this is a solo evening with a programme that pulls from three very different corners of the piano repertoire.
He opens with Beethoven's Sonata in C Op 111, one of the composer's final piano sonatas and a piece known for its demanding technical range. From there, he moves into Scriabin's Sonata No 5, a work from the Russian composer's middle period that trades Beethoven's structure for something more atmospheric and restless. The evening rounds out with Chopin's Nocturnes, the sort of lyrical, late-night music that usually provides the quietest moment of a recital.
It's a broad spread for one night: the late Beethoven, the early twentieth-century intensity of Scriabin, and the romanticism of Chopin. Having them all in one sitting lets you hear the contrast between them rather than just picking one style and sticking with it.
