Open studio session at Becca Rowland's home studio, following a piece of fused glass from the kiln to its finished state.
Becca Rowland is opening up her home studio in Harcourt Hill on Saturday 31 October, and it's a rare chance to see how fused glass actually comes together. Rather than just looking at the finished pieces, you'll follow one from the kiln through to its final state, with Rowland explaining the process as she goes. It's an open studio exhibition and a workshop in one, so you're seeing the work in the place it's made.
One of the things she'll talk through is the strip-cut method, where hot glass flows to fill deliberately placed voids. She also gets into the maths and science that shape the work: aperiodic tiling and textile-inspired pattern-making, and the chemical reactions that give different glass colours their character. The same metals extracted in laboratories and factories end up as vivid colour locked in glass, and that's part of what she'll be explaining.
It's aimed at teenagers (14+) and adults, so it's as much for people who've never touched glass as it is for those who have. The session runs from 12:00 for five hours, giving you plenty of time to wander around and ask questions rather than rushing through. There's limited parking on site, so you might want to plan your journey a bit in advance.
