Six half-day watercolour workshops led by artist John Somerscales, covering composition, colour and narrative effects, with all materials provided.
John Somerscales is leading a six-week watercolour course at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, starting Tuesday 27 October. It's a series of half-day sessions held in the Ashmolean Learning Studio, and it's designed for people who already know their way around a brush and want to push their watercolour work into more advanced, and sometimes unusual, territory.
Over the six weeks, Somerscales walks you through the building blocks of a painting: how to compose and plan a piece, working with tonal range, and getting a handle on colour temperature. From there, it moves into more narrative effects—the kind of atmospheric details that can change the whole feel of a scene, like dramatic skies, figures, smoke and steam. The aim is to create paintings with movement, atmosphere and texture, rather than just a static image.
It's part of the Ashmolean's Love & Legacy season, so it sits within a wider run of events the museum has put together. All materials are provided, which is a nice touch—you just turn up and paint without having to lug your own kit across town.
